This is the first post of my new blog concept: Food Debunked. My goal is to debunk a specific food or drink once a month to inform my readers of foods that may appear healthy but in truth might be more detrimental than good. My first debunk is the Capri Sun Roarin Waters. Every birthday party we went to this summer was serving these drinks. They are so low in sugar and calories, they must be healthy right? Think again. I HATE these drinks. I HATE that the FDA gets away with calling them "all natural" "no artificial colors or flavors". Do you want to know what the ingredients are? High fructose corn syrup, Splenda, and water. I am guilty of being a Splenda user once in a while, however for a young immune system, artificial sweeteners can be really dangerous! Studies show that they cause neurological problems in children over an extended period of time. I don't care if you are worried about sugar or if your child is overweight. Please don't give your kids artificial sweeteners. If you want to cut back on the sugar, make your own "Roarin Water' with water and a small amount of 100% juice. Hope you all enjoy the post! Let me know what you think.

Vacationland
This is the view from our house. Its just walking distance to the ocean!
This is the amazing house we stayed it. It used to be two houses! It was built in the 1800's and has since been relocated.
Men being men and chopping wood. My grandfather's house has a working water well, compost pile, and a wood burning stove. Pretty awesome if you ask me.
Isn't this just a great picture of my mom and my sister? I love these ladies!
Watching these two interact makes my heart melt. I know she will grow up wanting to marry her daddy.

The Great Organic Debate
Okay, okay... This topic is very controversial and it something that I am incredibly passionate about. As a country, we are very mislead about what foods are healthy and what are not. I want to give my honest thoughts on organic food versus conventional. I am no expert. I have done a lot of research and I have learned a lot about the dangers of pesticides in our foods through my college nutrition courses. So here we go:
First of all let me start by clearing up some confusion about the term ALL NATURAL. Unlike the term ORGANIC, ALL NATURAL is not regulated by the FDA which means that food producers can label anything as all natural and it literally doesn't mean a thing! That makes me angry, but its just the way it is. If you really want to rest assured that your food is not full of preservatives and junk, then you have to buy organic.
What is "organic"?
Organic fruits and veggies and grown completely naturally with no pesticides whatsoever. Conventional fruits and veggies are not only given pesticides, they are also genetically modified and are sometimes grown in a laboratory. Gross!
Organic milk comes from cows that graze freely. The cows are never given antibiotics or growth hormones. The conventional milk at the grocery store that claims to be "rBST free" is a huge marketing scheme, they are using other growth hormones, so don't be fooled!!
Organic meat comes from animals that graze freely and are fed their natural diet rather than animal bi-products or corn. The animals are never injected with salt enhancers or growth hormones. Conventional meat cannot be trusted unless it is labeled ALL NATURAL and there is a pledge on the packaging that discloses the conditions of how the animals are treated and fed.
Why is organic better?
That's a great question. I thought you would never ask! Researchers believe that the pesticides* on our fruits and vegetables are so unnatural that overtime they can cause illness and even cancers such as colon or pancreas. This makes sense because these toxins have to pass directly through the pancreas and colon.
Research shows that the hormones in milk and meat alter our hormone levels A LOT! Ask your grandma when she developed breasts ( I bet she was a teenager) and then look around you and notice how many young girls have breasts. This is not a coincidence, its because these hormones are very present in our food. Fifty years ago, everything was organic, now everything is altered and unnatural, even more so than we realize. An excess of hormones in your body is dangerous no matter how old you are, but it is especially dangerous for a young child.
What do I feed my family?
Okay so this may shock you, but I don't eat all organic. I can't afford to! My daughter consumes only organic meat and dairy products and this is something that I want to uphold through her entire childhood. I endure a lot of criticism for this, but my husband and I decided that our family's health is one of our top priorities, so its worth it. Once in a while, she has non organic cheese, but this is very rare. My husband and I eat organic meat and milk at home, but if we go out to dinner, we will eat conventional meat. We try to limit eating out as much as possible, but sometimes its inevitable. Young children are much more at risk for exposure because their bodies are so premature compared to a grown adult. As for organic produce, I always buy organic when it comes to the dirty dozen. http://www.organic.org/articles/showarticle/article-214
Everything else I just wash very very thoroughly.
I hope this post will be informative to everyone. If you are still a skeptic, do your research and make an informed decision for the well being of your family. Please leave your comments too. I want to hear your thoughts!
*Unlike with dairy and meat, you can wash off the pesticides from your produce. Water alone is not enough. Make a solution with 2 parts water, 1 part vinegar, a squeeze of lemon and several tablespoons of baking soda. You will be amazed by how much dirt and gunk you see in the water!

Baby Dolls
Okay so I hope this post isn't too blunt or forward, but Sophia is REALLY ready to be a big sister! Baby dolls are always the first toy to catch her attention no matter where we are. She loves to feed the baby, put it down for "night night", read stories, and give her baby a bath. Our trip to the childrens' museum was no exception. She was absolutely mesmerized by all the babies! God willing, Sophia will get her wish VERY soon and she will be on her way to becoming a big sister.
Baby needed a blanket because he was cold :)
She is so gentle with the babies. She takes her role of Mommy very seriously!

I Hope I Always Remember These...
Sophia, you are growing faster than I can keep up with. Everyday I feel like you are changing and learning something new. Being your mother is one of the greatest joys of my life. I wish I could remember every precious thing you do and say. Here is a list of things that I hope I will always remember about you:
1. You are completely obsessed with the book, "One Fish Two Fish". Every night before bed, you make us read it to you.
2. You can count to 14, but once you reach 14, you keep repeating it, saying, "fo teen, fo teen, fo teen..."
3. When you want to be held, you say, "hold you".
4. You can recite the entire alphabet and "Twinkle Twinkle"
5. Every time we get in the car you say, "go shopping, go shopping" because you know that mommy will always buy you a special treat whether it be blackberries, gummies, or a Larabar.
6. After going on your first pony ride, you are very proud to tell people about it by saying, "my hat, my hat". ( You wore a helmet)
7. Although you and I have a special relationship, I think that you will grow up to be a daddy's girl. You are both head over heels for each other and I love watching you two be silly together.

Giddy Up!
We were very lucky this weekend to be able to get away from this disgusting desert heat and head up north for a few days! Granted, it was still 90 degrees, its much better than record highs close to 120 degrees. Sophia surprised us with her eagerness to take her very first pony ride. We really thought she would be hesitant, but she loved it! If you ask her about her pony ride she will tell you about the horse and then proceed to say, "my hat, my hat". She was very proud of her awesome helmet!
